The Saint masquerading as a doctor

Doctor Madho Lal Mullick was born in Alipur (Bengal) in 1878 AD. His father Devi Prasad Mullick was also a doctor (Provincial Medical Service). But he died very early when Doctor Madholal Mullick was studying in the seventh class. The entire burden of the house fell on his elder brother. After passing the F.A. examination, he went to Lahore Medical College to study medicine where he studied for four years. He got the degree the next year. But on the insistence of his friend Dr. Bageshwari Narayan, he went to England with him. After passing matriculatio, he got married but after two years his wife died. Therefore, there was no problem in going to England. But the people of the community expelled him from the caste for going to England.

In 1902, he got the medical degrees L.R.C.P.  & S. (Edinburgh) & L. F. P. & S. (Glassgow) and returned to India. After working as a doctor for some time in Allahabad, he took guidance from Maharaj Saheb. His heart became so soft that he could not run the English dispensary for long. He got restless from surgery and started doing homeopathy treatment and achieved such success and fame in it that he was considered the biggest homeopathic doctor of Allahabad in his time.

Doctor Mullick was dear to everyone and was very poor-friendly and very simple and innocent. He not only used to give free medicine to the poor but also paid for their food and drink from his own pocket. He loved people of every community, so much so that if he was going to see a patient or attending a religious gathering or was invited by Maharaj and on the way some poor and suffering person said that the condition of a certain person at his place was very bad, he would immediately go to his place and see the patient and after making all arrangements for medicines etc. he would then proceed further. He used to do many types of treatments i.e. Allopathic, Homeopathic, Vaidya, Hikmat, Chromopathic, Hydropathic, home remedies and whatever treatment was possible at a low cost, he used to do as per the disease and the patient.

His fee was eight rupees but he never asked for it. He never asked for any fee from anyone. He would take whatever anyone gave. Despite this, he had a lot of money in general and it was only spent on the upbringing and help of the poor and suffering. He used to help the poor a lot in a secret way.  He would secretly send money to the house of anyone he saw unhappy.

In 1907, he married again, but his wife died after remaining ill for 11 years. Her illness was also very bad. Her whole body was full of boils and pus. The doctor himself used to apply bandages on her. This woman harassed the doctor a lot and made him suffer. Some people started harassing him and he had to marry for the third time in 1924 at the age of 46. A son (Mohan Lal Mullick) was born to that lady who is alive. About two and a half years after this marriage, the doctor passed away. The wife also passed away after a few days.

At last, when  Maharaj ji went to see him, he did not have a single penny. A hakim sahab, who belonged to the family of Hakim Badshah, was sitting near him. The doctor sahab said to him, "Give me two rupees, my Guru Maharaj is about to come, I will give it to him."  Maharaj ji often used to mention this for a long time.

The fact was that he had a lot of income but he used to spend it with both hands. He showed the world by following the order of Kabir Sahib, "Fill the boat with water, fill the house with money, use both hands, this is the work of a wise man".

Maharaj Sahib had said for him in the village satsang that if Doctor Mullick gives even water to a patient, it will work as medicine. This was indeed the case. Doctor Sahib used to keep water prasadi in ten to fifteen bottles. Everyone got equal benefit from the same water or Charnamrit. When influenza struck in 1996 and there was no cure for it, at that time he treated thousands of patients with water prasadi.

Doctor Sahib was a great admirer of prasadi.  Whatever the disease of himself or others, Prasad never stopped eating; rather he used to eat and feed others forcefully. He did not know how to speak to anyone in anger.

He was a great lover of Radhaswami faith and a devotee of high stature. Maharaj ji’s gaze was always on him. After he shed his robes, Maharaj said in the general satsang, this was a swan soul.

Doctor sahab used to wear very simple clothes. No one could call him a great doctor from his appearance and clothes. If he reached the satsang late, he would not enter the satsang room. He would sit on a mat, wearing shoes. In the summer season, he would take the fan from the fanner's hand and pull the fan with both hands for an hour and a half as long as the satsang continued.

He had developed a disease in the end. He had stopped eating and drinking for a long time. His body had become completely wooden. There was no trace of meat.  Only two bones were visible.

On 26th September 1926, when Huzur Babuji Maharaj's Satsang was going on in Allahabad, news came that the condition was very critical. Maharaj ji expressed regret. In the course of the conversation, elder brother Lala Sujansinghji Seth said that if a patient stays at home for a long time, he suffers and the entire family also suffers.

On 28th September 1926, at about four o'clock in the morning, he shook hands with all those who were present, said Radhaswami and departed. The Paath continued till the end. The matter was immediately sent to Maharaj ji.

Maharaj said that this is correct but as per the point of view of charity, it is beneficial to remain ill for a long time. It makes you feel very light. In this world, there are those people who leave quickly. But in charity, the glory lies in shedding the burden of karmas. Karmas are not washed away by leaving quickly.

Maharaj again asked Daya whether he had phlegm in his throat right now? The answer was, no. After Mangalacharan he said something which was directed towards Doctor Mullick. In the evening, Maharaj came to Doctor Mullick’s bungalow. Due to weakness, there was not much conversation. On 27 September 1626, in the morning, he came to know from Doctor Sarkar that the matter was near. Hence, Maharaj ended the satsang with Daya early and went to Doctor Sahib’s bungalow. Some cursory conversation took place.  Maharaj asked Daya to recite some words. Since many satsangis had accompanied him, the recitation went on well and continued for a long time.

In the evening, Maharaj again visited Dr Mullick. His condition was critical. Very little conversation took place. Presents were presented. While Maharaj ji was returning, Doctor Saheb humbly clapped and said Radha Soami to everyone. There was great joy and clapping throughout the day and night.

On 28th September 1926, at about four in the morning, he shook hands with everyone who was present and said Radha Soami and left. The recitation continued till the end. Immediately, a message was sent to Maharaj ji.

The morning satsang ended very soon and Maharaj ji and all the satsangis reached the bungalow. Maharaj ji looked at them and garlanded them. Doctor Saheb’s family members requested that Maharaj ji also come to the banks of the Ganga. Maharaj said, I will definitely come.  But he had no faith in Ganga or Yamuna. It would have been better if the last rites were performed at the nearby Kakraha Ghat on Yamuna. Everyone would have joined in the procession easily and they would have got free soon. But they insisted on taking it to Ganga. Maharaj ji graciously agreed.

When the body of Doctor Saheb was taken out of the bungalow, the scene was such that the road was so crowded that people of every community and creed walked along on foot and in ekka, buggy, motor etc. The decoration of flowers and garlands and shower of kevada continued from the beginning till Kheer and the tune of Radhaswami name continued continuously. When the body reached near the police station in the square, it was stopped and Huzur Babuji Maharaj got down from the horse carriage, gave his shoulder and walked a few steps. On the request of the people, Maharaj ji again got on the carriage. Everyone reached Nagbasu on the ghat of Ganga with the body. It was approximately one o’clock. Maharaj looked around carefully.  And the dead body was placed on the pyre. It was the rainy season. The Ganges was also in a flood. There were pebbles everywhere. Maharaj ji also sat on the pebbles. The recitation continued. When the cremation was over, Maharaj got up.
